What Is Sin?

To sin is to miss the target. That requires there be a target to be missed. Paul said that, where no law is, sin is not imputed, because sin is “transgression” – violation – of law. From this, we learn that the target is whatever “law” has been issued. Until we have a target, we cannot be held responsible for failing to hit it. And God, Who is just, does not count our sin against us apart from our having been given that target – His perfect nature and His spoken commands.

Paul refers to the Law of Moses as being like a school-master, tutoring Israel to righteousness. The “Ten Commandments” were God’s summary of there moral conduct that should be reflected in the life of any Israelite who believed and revered God...

Do Not Entice Them to Sin

Satan is the enemy who first presented sin as desirable, enticing Eve to oppose God's command. Once she and Adam had sinned, Satan was their accuser before God, seeking their condemnation and punishment. Parents are often guilty, whether deliberately or negligently, of filling the role of Satan in their children's lives by introducing sin into the lives of their children, then punishing the children for their wrong-doing. We must never bring anything into the life of a child that draws them away from God through sin or unfaithfulness.Read More

Book Review – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Review – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This second book is significantly more sinister than the first one, introducing within the plot the demonic possession of an unwitting and unwilling little girl, for the purpose of destroying both Harry and any wizards at Hogwarts who have “Muggle” ancestry.

The plot is much better developed than the first book, while continuing to offer potions, spells and magic words for readers to “try out” if they are so inclined.

Occult concepts introduced in this story include talismans, amulets, levitation, re-incarnation, healings, thought projection, guided imagery/hypnosis, unity power, and Phoenixes...

Commentary on Harry Potter

It remains a mystery to me how any parent could conclude that the Harry Potter books are suitable reading material for their children, as young as eight years old. In one case, the answer has been reduced to “Just because the lifestyle doesn’t match mine, doesn’t mean you throw the book out.” Certainly that statement is true as it stands, but it is an over-simplification of the issue, and demonstrates either profound ignorance, or just plain deceit.

It isn’t just the problem of “good guys” who lie, steal, cheat, disobey, hate, swear, get drunk, gamble, seek vengeance, and consider killing their enemies; nor the frequent descriptions of disgusting things or behaviours; nor the total immersion of the reader in elements of witchcraft, including detailed spells, potions, charms and sym...

Spiritual Perversion in the Church of Jesus Christ

Jeremiah 7:8-10 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not, and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are delivered to do all these abominations?”‘”

The words were spoken to Israel, but there is a principle for Christ’s church as well: We were not delivered from the condemnation of sin so that we should continue to live in sin, doing those things which God has condemned, and despising God in favour of other, more appealing “gods” that serve our satisfaction instead of our deepest need.

God’s word to us is clear concerning what is right and wrong, what is wicked and what is good...

Man’s Sin Nature

The Bible does not teach that man’s nature has changed since the fall, despite the concept of man’s sin nature becoming widely accepted due to its propagation through certain theological systems. Some modern English versions of the Bible, including the NIV, have erroneously used the English phrase “sin nature” or “sinful nature” for the Greek word sarx , which is correctly translated ‘flesh’, imposing a sense that does not exist in the text itself.

Man’s nature had always included the capacity to sin, yet at creation God declared his creation to be ‘very good’.[1] Adam’s original sin therefore was not a result of his nature except to the extent of his ability to commit it...

Temptation

That’s what temptation is: struggle against the urges and desires that are by nature wicked, or by circumstance detrimental. And that’s why so many people fail; because they won’t struggle. When temptation comes – and it will always come – the voice of “I want” is allowed to drown out the objections, and the urge to satisfy every tugging desire over-rules any sense of what is right, best, or helpful.

When Man Chooses to Refuse God

When man chooses to refuse God, why does he then accuse God of abandoning him to the consequences of his independence? While demanding that God exercise no authoritative influence over his life, he continues to expect Him to exercise exceptional benefit in interfering with any negative influences that may cross his path.

When we meet other people who desire the kind of relationship with us, one in which they only desire our presence to improve some otherwise unpleasant reality in their life, we call those people “users”.

Somehow, men have come to believe that because God is abundantly able to affect any aspect of our material existence, that if He is a good God, He is also obligated to do so to our advantage...
